Wire & Cable Labeling Examples

One cable connecting to multiple devices

If the cable has a designation (WX-44), it should be used on line 1 of the wire tag. If a cable designation is not provided, use descriptive text to identify the cables main purpose.

Label each wire according to its connection point. Example:
CL-K414:2
CL-K414:4
CL-K414:6

Cable with 1 device connecting to 1 terminal strip

Label each individual wire according to its connection point. Ex: XA-XL3:22 Include the cables destination on line one (XA-XL3). Description text should be added to lines 2, 3, and 4 as needed. The function group (AX) and device designation (M10) may be included on line 2 of the wire tag to facilitate wiring when applicable.

Cable containing 1 device connecting to multiple terminal strips

Label each individual wire according to its connection point. Ex: XA-XL3C:1 The function group and device designation (AX-M10) should be included on line 1 to facilitate wiring. Description text should be added to lines 2, 3, and 4. of the wire tag as needed.

Cable connecting to removable plug

Include the plugs designation on line 1 (XD-XS252) Description text should be added to lines 2, 3, and 4. of the wire tag as needed. The function group and device designation (not shown) may be included on line 2 of the wire tag to facilitate wiring when applicable.

Individual wires that are NOT color coded or are NOT numbered must have wire tags applied. Ex: XD-XS252:5

Cable connecting to removable plug and wires are removed from plug at tear down

Include the plugs designation on line 1 (XA-XL16). The function group and device designation (RA-A1) is included on line 2 facilitating wiring. Description text should be added to lines 3 and 4 of the wire tag as needed. All individual wires must be labeled. Ex:XA-XL16:5

Manufactured plug connecting to a unit device where connection is specified

Label cable according to the connection specified in electrical print (XD-130CON). The unit device designation (DI-E10) may be included on line 2 of the wire tag for reference, but is not required. Description text should be added to lines 2, 3 and 4 of the wire tag, as needed.

Cable with specified or unspecified intermediate connection point

When an intermediate connection point is not specified, label the intermediate connection point according to the function group and device at the machine end (AX-G10). If the intermediate connection point is specified use the specified designation (XD-AXS33). Label the machine end (AX-G10) and control end (AS-G1:JF111) of the cables according to their connection points.

#2 Grounding connections

Use a round PE symbol to mark all PE connections. Label CNC end connections according to their connection point. Label machine end connections according to the unit/device being grounded (PE Shuttle 1). Low & High voltage grounds must be connected to the appropriate ground bars in the CNC.

Other grounding connections

Use a round PE symbol to mark all PE connection points. Label CNC end connections according to their connection point (XA-XLPE2). Label machine end connections using the function group – Device : connection point (WX1-X210:PE). Description text may be used to facilitate wiring at Fives or in the field (Shuttle 1 Profi). Low & High voltage grounds must be connected to the appropriate ground bars in the CNC.

Encoder and Scale description text

The term "Encoder" should be used for cable description text on motor encoders of all types. The term "Scale" should be used for the Hidenhain linear or rotary type scales typically used for machine axes.

Common labeling conventions

Generally speaking, the first line of any wire or cable tag should contain the Function group – Device : Connection point (CL-K414:2) as defined in the electrical prints. Exceptions and other rules may apply.

Description text should be the same on both ends of the cable or wire and is used for informational purposes.
